Officers of the
Union
President:
Darrell Hopkins SR. A Father of three Union roofers Darrell
JR., Travis and Jeff. Darrell was initiated 11/1/1985 he has
held many different position and offices in the Union. At the
present time he is the President and Chairman of the Executive
Board, instructor for both Build up and Steep roofing. He is
very well liked and respected as one of the most giving members
of roofers Local #49.
Vice President:Ray
Carpenter (RC) was initiated on 9/15/1989 has been a long time
Executive Board Member. RC is one of our Single Ply Instructors
whom gets great praises from Contractors, members, Apprentices
and Co-Instructors as one of the best Instructors we have. RC
has always taken the watch dog role on committees; he always
listens and contemplates before speaking on a subject. As soon
as someone is out of line or is taking advantage of a fellow
member RC is there to protect them, he is always looking out for
the members of the Union.
Recording
Secretary:
The Recording Secretary is an extremely difficult job; Paul is
doing a great job. Paul Corbin was initiated on 9/16/1996.Paul
was officially elected to the Executive Board in July 2009,after
attending many meeting taking notes in 2009.Paul
ran the first ever Roofers Local #49 booth at the Labor Day
picnic at Oaks Park on Labor Day, 2006 and
and every year
since. He did a great
job greeting roofers and guest that visited the booth. He even
took pictures of Governor Kulongoski visiting our booth. Paul
framed the pictures of the event and it is displayed at the
Union hall. He was assigned to the Health & Welfare Trust as a
Trustee by President Darrell Hopkins.Paul is one of the
friendliest members you will ever meet.
Warden:
William (John) Havens was initiated on 12/2/1991. He takes his
job as Warden very serious and does an excelled job.Their are good
members of the Roofers Union Local #49 but John take’s a back
set to no one, he always makes himself heard at all
Union meetings.He is also serving as an Executive Board
member.
Executive Board
Member: Russ
Garnett was initiated on 12/10/1990 a former two times President
Russ has been on the Executive Board for a long time. Russ is a
Trustee on the Pension and JATC Trusts we appointed him delegate
to the AFL-CIO because of his knowledge of politics. Russ is
well spoken and is the one of the most outspoken member of the
Union. He makes himself heard in every meeting he attends. He always
stands up for himself and the members.
Executive Board
Member:Travis Hopkins was initiated on
11/1/1997. Travis has helped out and served on many Union
events. He has run every Horse shoe Competition at our picnics.
He was the captain and organizer of our soft ball teams. He has
served as the judge to supervise many election boards. He was
appointed to the JATC Committee, after attending many meetings
as an alternate.
JATC Committee Member:Jim Breneman was initiated on 12/23/1992. This is Jim's first
committee for the Union he was an overwhelming choice from our
ex-President Russ Garnett whom appointed him. Jim has always
attended Union Meetings. Jim is a good Union member always
calling the Union to let the Business Manager know where the bad
guys are. He stops in regularly to inform the Business Manager
what he knows about the nonunion shops. He then checks out the
Apprenticeship training.He is also serving as an Executive
Board member.
JATC Committee Member-Russ
Nicolai was initiated on 10/10/1998. Russ has been
very out spoken on safety not only for roofers but for every
trade. He is currently a Safety Consultant at Snyder Roofing. He
has served on many OSHA committees such as a task force on
warning lines and fall protection. He has attended many OSHA
classes on his own time as well as representing Roofers Local
#49.He’s safety reports at every Union meeting he attends are
very informative.
JATC Committee
Member: Dave
Hughey was initiated on 1/16/1990. David Hughey is very well
respected by his coworkers and the members that attend the Union
meetings. He always presents himself as an intelligent roofer
and member. He has had to take care of a bed ridden member of
his family. But this never stops him from coming to the
Union meetings. This is Dave's first time on a committee and he
is doing a good job.
Health & Welfare
Trustee: Pat Castle was initiated on
11/14/1988.
Nominated for the Executive Board and other Offices many times,
Pat has always turned down the nominations. Pat has helped us
with negotiations many times not receiving any praise or
compensation. He is one of the most honest members we have. He
is always ready to help when called upon. He has already made
his presents felt as a new Trustee of the Health & Welfare Trust
Apprenticeship Coordinator Clint Mapes:
Clint has had some mighty big shoes to fill since taking
over for long time Coordinator Roy Bolt. Clint is an extremely
intelligent, hard working, and very compassionate educator who
wants the entire Apprentice taught not only to be highly skilled
roofers but to be good people also. He comes to work with a
professional demeanor and a pleasant attitude that makes others
want to work with him.
Business Manager:
Michael A. Thompson was Initiated 10/13/1977 and elected the
Union President in 1983. He held this position until he was
elected Business Managers in 1996 and he is now in his 6th term
of office. He has had a number of family members who have roofed
Father Allan Thompson Brother David Uncles Larry, Bill and Vern
and a cousin Chris Thompson.
Office Manager: Conny Hudson started
working for the Union on May 15, 1996. She has become a very
strong Union presents at the Union hall. She has performed many
different rolls in her years as Office Manager. Such as
consoling a member who has lost a family member. Standing up at
funerals to say some kind words about a fellow member or
colleague. Always making sure that every member pays their dues so
they don’t go expelled and have to repay their initiation fees.
Conny was appointed to the JATC committee by President Darrell
Hopkins for her vast knowledge of the Apprentice program. She’s been a friend when a lot of our members have needed someone
to talk to.
